ULI Philadelphia is recruiting 8-10 members to serve on a two-day Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) that will provide St. Andrew’s School recommendations on developing a long-term plan towards responsible stewardship and implementing institutional carbon-neutrality. St. Andrew’s School is a coeducational, Episcopal, all-boarding school located on 2,200 acres in Middletown, Delaware.

Sustainability and carbon reduction are key elements for the school’s leadership to consider as St. Andrew’s School approaches its centennial, set to take place in 2029. The school has already taken steps to improve their carbon footprint through past building renovations and upgrades, including LEED certifications, a 50kw solar array, several fleet vehicles powered by either biodiesel or electricity, and 100 acres of reforested farmland. Furthermore, the culture and curriculum of St. Andrew’s has long prioritized environmental stewardship through a variety of programs and outreach.
With that said, the school is faced with a series of renovation, renewal and replacement projects that require attention, all of which will replace outdated and antiquated operational systems on which the school’s physical plant rely. Additionally, much of the 2,200 acre campus is dedicated farmland (approximately 1,500 acres) leased to local farmers. The school is considering all green farming and best practices that align with the school’s campus-wide efforts of responsible land-use.
The school is seeking perspective and guidance from ULI panelists on measurable steps that can be taken to achieve carbon neutrality and recommendations for stewardship that go well beyond the inclusion of green-technologies, but also campus-wide behaviors.
Questions for Panel are as follows,
- What set of actions or capital improvements are likely to yield the largest reductions in energy usage across all facilities and equipment?
- What opportunities might there be to convert to more economical or environmentally sensitive energy sources?
- Should St. Andrew’s consider additional investments in its own renewable energy production capabilities and/or carbon capture?
- Are there other carbon footprint reduction areas beyond energy consumption that the school should consider, including but not limited to the school’s vast acreage and its currently dedicated farming usage?
- What, if any, downstream vendor or supplier/partner commitment to environmentally sensitive practices should the school consider implementing?
- How can any future work directly or indirectly benefit the culture of sustainability already in place at St. Andrew’s? What partnerships might the school consider?

- Building Engineers (specializing in sustainable operations)
- Institutional Sustainability Planning
- Green Building Concepts and Technologies
- Sustainable Agriculture Systems
- Renewable/Sustainable Infrastructure
- Government Relations and Strategic Partnerships
Panelist Expectations
- Be available for two full days on October 26 and 27, 2023
- Overnight accommodations available for panelists traveling more than 10 miles of the project site (350 Noxontown Road, Middletown, DE 19709-1605)
- Review extensive briefing materials provided by sponsor.
- Join conference calls in advance of TAP for sponsor and logistic briefings.
- Actively participate in stakeholder interviews, recommendation generation, and findings presentation.
- Adherence to ULI Conflict of Interest policy and Code of Ethics.
