ULI Philadelphia’s 2021 Awards for Excellence finalists represent superior development projects in the greater Philadelphia region that embody the ULI mission of shaping the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide.

John Fry, President, Drexel University, partner in the creation of Powel Elementary – Science Leadership Academy Middle School, developed by Wexford Science + Technology, joins us for “Five Minutes with a Finalist”. Here’s what he had to say:

Can you share your favorite story behind this project?

We began planning this project in 2011-12, and while there were many important partnerships that came together to make this project a reality, the highlight has to be the groundbreaking in December 2019. What stood out for me was not the great public-private collaboration that created this new public school facility, but the energy and excitement of the children from Powel and SLA Middle School who joined us. It was their school, and the middle schooler from SLA Middle School said it best when she said, “this will be our home.”

How have you had to respond or shift your project over the past year due to COVID-19?

The project observed the Governor’s order to cease operations, but we were able to recover time quickly – and, as it turns out, well ahead of when the School District of Philadelphia reopened schools to students.

What inspires you the most about Philadelphia and the region right now?

We have seen an unprecedented coalition involving universities, nonprofits, businesses, communities and government, all coming together to address the health and equity challenges of the past year. It has been hard work, but we can point to new cross-sector collaborations and commitments, and a real blueprint for an equitable and diverse future. This gives me great hope for our city and, most of all, for our children.
