Although the environmental, economic and social benefits of retaining and recycling existing buildings are well-known, many factors and policies encourage abandonment and demolition. Older vacant and underused buildings can be successfully adapted to meet new market needs and spark community revitalization. The National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP), through its Partnership for Building Reuse, selected ULI Philadelphia to identify key barriers, opportunities and strategies to slow demolition, reduce vacancies and encourage reuse.
